Consumer reports gave this a great review and that’s why i took the chance. You should too.
As someone who regularly clear snow myself, the Greenworks electric shovel has been a game changer during these last few winter storms here in Ontario. I find it much easier to manage than a traditional shovel, especially on cold icy days when lifting heavy snow can be exhausting for me.
I truly appreciate how manageable it feels in my hand. To shovel clears a 12 inch patch and throw snow far enough that’s not constantly re-clearing the same area. The electric power does most of the work, which reduces strain on my arms and back and the corded design means I don’t have to worry about batteries running out in the middle of my session.
I am of a small frame woman, who usually use a shovel by hand, but boy this thing is exactly what I needed in my outdoor winter toolbox. This electric shovel has honestly cut the time I spend outside shovelling by hand . I am actually motivated now to clean snow on my driveway believe it or not because of this electric shovel.
For walkways, steps, and smaller driveway, sections, this green works electric shovel feels practical, effortless and effective. From my experience, it’s a reliable option for anyone who wants an easier way to handle snow without the physical demand of manual shoveling, and it is something I feel comfortable using on my own. This is a must have winter tool power tool to have.
Make sure to push the battery all the way down.
I wasn’t thinking this would be very useful It looks much like a plastic toy plastic impeller
But what would have taken me 2 hrs -This little toy made short work of about 10 inches of heavy wet snow in a 4 car parking driveway and sidewalk done in 30 minutes
I m quite happy with it but again it was its first use
Mind you it was only snow
If there's leaves sticks stones or even salt I am thinking the plastic impeller would get damaged
I will come back to this review in the spring and update the usage
But for the price I am surprised and happy with the purchase
Saving me the heart attack at least for the first snow day
Spoiler: not true. At all.
We had one of those classic Canadian-weather moodswings — it snowed, then it rained, then everything froze solid. Basically the worst possible scenario for any small snow thrower.
And honestly?
This thing plowed right through the frozen, heavy, icy mess like it had something to prove.
✔️ Performance (frozen snow test!)
I included a video so you can see it in action, but here’s the quick version:
It grabbed frozen layers of snow and crusted slush without choking
Threw it far enough that I didn’t have to redo the same spot
Didn’t bounce, jam, or drag
I was genuinely shocked — I was ready for it to fail, and it didn’t.
✔️ Weight & maneuverability
Okay, let’s talk about the “IT’S SO HEAVY!!!” reviews.
If you're in basic normal shape, it’s not that heavy.
I was fully prepared for a workout session, and honestly… it wasn’t bad at all.
You’re pushing a motorized tool through snow — it’s not going to feel like a feather, but this was way easier than expected.
✔️ Assembly & battery
Unboxed it, popped the pieces together, done.
Battery charges fast (photos included).
Battery clicks securely in place — no wiggle, no guessing.
✔️ Build quality
The auger blades, interior compartment, and front scoop all feel solid.
I took close-up photos so you can see the thickness of the plastic and the inner housing — nothing feels cheap.
✔️ Ideal for:
✓ Decks
✓ Pathways
✓ Driveway edges
✓ People who want something easier than shoveling but don’t need a full snowblower monster
✓ Anyone dealing with surprise icy snow layers
✖️ Not ideal for:
— Clearing an entire long driveway after a blizzard in record time.
(It’s a thrower, not a 300-lb gas machine.)
⭐ Final thoughts
For the price, this exceeded every expectation.
It saved my back, saved my time, and handled icy frozen snow that even my shovel didn’t want to deal with.
I’d absolutely buy it again.
I included pictures of the unboxing, close-ups of the internals, the auger, the battery, and a video so you can see real-world performance.
It is heavy - I am strong and built - it’s still going to be a work out. They don’t do steps/stairs.
The straight forward shooting makes you think about where the snow / ice slush will go.
I cleaned a standard lumber outdoor deck with it and it did no damage. However the plastic leading edge caught on an uneven deck board… and it will catch on stone tiled steeping stones and sidewalk cracks. Meaning you have to hop it (slight lift it over anything that the leading edge catches on.
I have a modification idea that I am going to try . I am going to make teflon sliders that raise it 1/8 - 1/4 inch on either end. While it might stop it from leaving bare sidewalk , bare walking stones and a bare deck - it may leave a slight skim instead - it’s going to make less work at hopping it and cover more area.
I may create a thinker set of shoes to power shovel my drive way.
I’m using this for heavy snow and the serious yard works leaf blower for light powdery snow.
I purchased this electric snow shovel along with a 50 foot outdoor extension cord rated for cold weather. With the thicker insulation, the cord is not only heavier but a fair bit more rigid. Having to constantly manage the cord, along with the weight of the shovel, it can be a bit of a hassle at times, particularly in tighter spaces.
One other thing to keep in mind which seems true for all brands of electrical snow shovels, at least that I'm aware of, is that you must always stand with your back to the wind when using these.
This may be a flaw of the overall design of all electric snow shovels, but the fin that directs the snow away from you is permanently positioned unlike traditional snow blowers that generally allow you to adjust their discharge chute position to accommodate for the wind direction and where you want the snow to end up in relation to the machine.
So with that in mind, if you have no choice but to go against the wind, everything the electric snow shovel picks up will be blown right back at you and all over what you've previously cleared. This isn't such a big deal if are strategic about it. Where this may be a bit hassle is when the space that you are clearing is limited, such as a walkway and you aren't able to adjust your direction easily.
Overall, I am happy with this purchase. It does the job well enough.
UPDATE 24/02/2025: Been using it for a second season and its holding up fine. I'm cautious not to damage the spinning blade hitting anything including ice.
1. I installed two wheels. As you can see from the video, the wheels helped the moving greatly. I wish I had installed bigger ones. Also the wheel position is critical for it to work well (not too front not too back).
With the wheels, I can use one hand to push/pull with regular 6in snow. No need to lift
2. In added an part to help throw the snow better. The aluminum part as you can see collect the snow and makes it more concentrated such that the snow can be thrown better especially in windy condition.
I initially intended to make the extension with a turntable exit so I can change throwing direction. After experimental use, I found that my driveway doesn’t need it. So I didn’t go further to unnecessarily add weird to the tool.
Overall, it is worth it. I hope green works can add what I show here. For them it is probably an easy job.
One downside is that, it didn’t meet my expectation to throw snowbank. Not because of the power (it has more power than needed), but because of the plastic part that doesn’t work with the icy/frozen pieces embedded in the snowbank.
Some Pro and Con:
- Size: not big for storage a single garage, small is small a bit than a manual lawn mower.
- Weight: not too much for me but sure still hard to say for senior, kids and ladies (guess over 70).
- Build: strong but all plastic so don't treat it like it is like a commercial grade snow blower.
- Wires: that is always a Con. So for small size house and area only and wire is always in your way. Anyhow, not a problem for many people.. But still my wire is 100FT so long enough to help out my neighbors a bit to cut a hole on his snow bar and path for him.
- Setup: Quite easy, just attach the handle and work in 5-10 min. / no maintenance.
I usually don't recommend to buy the battery powered version, (and I can't comment it for I don't have one), because the Lithium battery is usually short time usage and expensive for high power motor equipment. Usually the power get weaker over time, or even not as powerful. And if you have one, better buy two or more batteries, otherwise you will regret you stuck in half of the job done.
Pros
Powerful.
Easy to assemble.
Pushing it around is no harder than a mower (it has no wheels).
Quiet electric motor.
Cons
No directional control, I have lawn to both side of double driveway, so no problem for me.
Blowbacks because the throw is always forward. I'll wear a rain jacket next time.
The on switch has to be gripped to keep it on (dead man switch), I had gloves on and the D handle still chafed my thumb and index finger (ouch) doing the grips to keep it going. I understand it is a safety feature, but I definitely will duct tape or bungee the switch to the ON position next time (It is not likely this thing will runaway or jump to bite me)
In the video, snow is 10 to 12 inches deep.
